August 27, 2017

“There's a sucker born every minute ...” - 19th Century Proverb

This podcast is part of a larger series.  A podcast that examines the question:  Do you truly understand markets?  Do you really know what you think you know about markets?  We are often shocked at the mistaken beliefs that so many in our society today have, regarding markets, investing and trading, processes and institutions.  You can find the first podcast here at this link.  And we are continue the discussion from the previous podcast at this link.

As we mentor individuals, we find that many individuals want to begin to make a living from trading.  And they see 'advertisements' from firms, that offer them the dream of 'quitting their 9 to 5 job, staying at home, and trading.

That is definitely possible.  We would simply say:  "Pull out your calculator".   What do we mean?

Grab your cup of coffee as we discuss all of this in the following podcast ...

Historically Low VIX, Trading History and Trader Interactions

June 24, 2017

“Success breeds complacency. Complacency breeds failure. Only the paranoid survive” - Andy Grove

On Friday, the VIX printed 9.85.

At the same time, I am hearing from folks at trading institutions and others ... that a great ... q u i e t seems to have set in, beyond the VIX.

It's as if traders have stopped interacting with one another, and conversing.  As we stated ... ones at trading institutions have mentioned this.  As well as others, who yes, try to help out new retail traders.

I've been trading for 21 years now.  And time periods like this?  Where traders almost stop interacting with one another?

I have always found them very frustrating.  And I think such "quiet" periods can be very dangerous.

Grab your cup of coffee as we discuss this in the following podcast ...

NASDAQ Selloff? Nothing is Static

June 11, 2017

“Everyone in a complex system has a slightly different interpretation. The more interpretations we gather, the easier it becomes to gain a sense of the whole.” - Margaret J. Wheatley

On Friday, the Nasdaq Composite and tech in general, collapsed.

At the same time, I have heard ones state that this is due to the fact that "Amazon (AMZN) has too high a P/E ratio" and "Netflix (NFLX) valuation is too high"?  If you are new to valuations ... what does a P/E ratio not take into account? Is there another relationship at work?  What is a 'good value'?  What are variables that you have to consider when you look at valuations?  Remember, that the markets are an incredibly complex system.

Let's talk about the above factors.  So grab your cup of coffee as we discuss this in the following podcast ...

Review of Economic Storms and Thoughts on Macro

April 8, 2017

“If, then, I were asked for the most important advice I could give, that which I considered to be the most useful to the men of our century, I should simply say: in the name of God, stop a moment, cease your work, look around you.” - Leo Tolstoy, Essays, Letters and Miscellanies

Every so often, we release our thoughts on macro.  Or ... the economy.

But who exactly are we?  Why should you listen to us?  What has been your thoughts in the past?  And if you do not need an understanding of macro-economics in order to develop a trading process, then why do we discuss macro-economics at all?

Dan’s Holy Gospel Hour: Corruption

December 6, 2016

You may or may not know that I am apt to 'rant' from time to time.

I had this teacher when I went to High School more than 24 years ago. He was a 27 year old guy in our Architecture and Drafting classes.  As he was 27, we considered him the really "hip" teacher at the time.  Naturally, as he was the "cool" teacher and we were a pack of idiots, we'd give him a ton of garbage because we felt that we could get away with it.  You know ... because he was "cool", and therefore he should allow us to do whatever we pleased.

Of course what we did not realize since we were young and stupid, is that our teacher had a boss.  Someone to report to.  This wasn't "school" to him.  This was his job.  And the garbage that we gave to him, got back to his boss.  Which meant grief for the "cool" teacher that we were giving a ton of garbage to. So every once in a while, he'd march into class.

Shut the door.

Lock the door.

And say:  "Alright listen.  I've been getting barked out by the boss.  So you are in for a Holy Gospel Hour.  So sit down, and shut up".  And he'd ream us out for a solid hour.  He got his rant in.

I've sort of adopted that 'model' as it were when I rant.  And thus, the name ... "Holy Gospel Hour"

We keep getting requests for more "rants by Dan".  In fact, some have even asked that the 'rants' be an hour long.  The problem, is that trading has been going well.

It's hard to have a 'rant', when your trading is going well.

However, we thought what we could do, is resurrect the "rants" that I had before I joined Sharpe Trade, LLC.

One of these "rants", is for those that wish to sit and "whine and complain" about the wealthy, and try to tie those who are wealthy ... to corruption.  You will have to excuse the audio quality.  This was recorded several years ago.

But those who wish to whine and complain about corruption?

Yeah.

I had a few things to say about that ...

Do You Truly Understand Markets: How Returns Work

November 13, 2016

“To know an object is to lead to it through a context which the world provides.” - William James

As we mentor individuals, we find one of the largest stumbling blocks for new traders?  Is not understanding how returns work.  It is usual for a new trader to have expectations of returns, that no one in world has ever been able to maintain.

Grab your cup of coffee as we discuss all of this in the following podcast ...

Do You Truly Understand Markets: Ideological Reporting

October 30, 2016

"The press doesn't stop publishing, by the way, in a fascist escalation; it simply watches what it says. That too can be an incremental process, and the pace at which the free press polices itself depends on how journalists are targeted." - Naomi Wolf

In the last podcast in this series, we discussed how bad information is spread.  Many times, this is through media sources.  This week, let's continue that conversation, and focus on one aspect of how bad information is spread throughout the public consciousness.

Grab your cup of coffee as we discuss all of this in the following podcast ...

A Bit of a Large Task

October 16, 2016

As you may remember, we are in the midst of a ‘podcast series’ here at Sharpe Trade.  That discusses the topic:  “Do you Truly Understand Investing and Markets”.   We began by asking:  “Who are you listening to?” We alsodiscusssed ‘bad information’, and how easily bad information can spread.

We want to continue that particular theme in the next podcast in this series.  That is, the spread of bad information.  We will say that this series is proving to be a bit of a larger task that first envisioned.

However, if you will remember the introduction to our podcast on attention spans … we stated that we would not publish a podcast, unless we felt it was up to a higher standard.  So there may not be a podcast every weekend.  Nor are we ready to publish a podcast this Sunday.

But rest assured we are still working on the next podcast in this series.
